
Why we built our bathroom mirror heaters to be modular
Most people install a mirror heater and then completely forget it exists. That’s usually fine—until about five years down the road. Between the constant steam and the heating and cooling cycles, those heating elements eventually just give up. The nightmare scenario? Having to rip your entire mirror assembly off the wall just because one little tube burned out. We thought that was ridiculous, so we did things differently.
The “Plug-and-Play” Approach
We went with a modular layout. Instead of soldering the heating element directly into the frame, the infrared tube sits in its own little cradle with quick-disconnect terminals. It’s simple. When a tube finally hits its limit, you just pull the module out, swap in a new element, and slide it back in. You’re done. No taking apart the glass, no messing with the moisture-proof housing, and no spending your entire Saturday on a repair that should take five minutes.
Dealing with the Heat
Bathrooms are tough on electronics. You’ve got these rapid temperature swings every time the heater kicks on, which means the glass is constantly expanding and contracting. In a lot of heaters, that movement loosens the electrical contacts. Once they get loose, you get arcing, and eventually, you get melted plastic. Not great. We solved this with a modular clip system. It keeps a steady, firm pressure on the terminals regardless of the temperature. It just stays put.
The Trade-off
Now, to be honest, this design takes up a bit more room than a soldered board. You lose a few millimeters of space. But for us—and for any homeowner or facility manager—that’s a trade worth making every single time. It’s a lot cheaper to buy a replacement 50W tube than it is to buy a brand-new high-end LED mirror just because the heater died. Wire it up once. When the tube goes, drop in a new one. No soldering, no guesswork, and no headaches.
