
Why Your Bathroom Heater Actually Quits on You
If you’ve ever had a bathroom mirror heater just… stop working, you aren’t alone. It usually happens because of a simple, annoying problem: moisture. Think about it. You’ve got a tiny space filled with steam, and inside that, you have an infrared element getting incredibly hot. That’s a recipe for disaster. Most of the time, the heater doesn’t fail because the bulb burns out—it fails where the wires connect to the glass.
The slow death of a cheap seal
Here is how it usually goes down. Most budget heaters just use basic glue to hold the wires in place. But these heaters go through “thermal cycling”—basically, they get scorching hot and then ice cold over and over again. Eventually, that glue cracks. Once there’s a tiny gap, the bathroom steam creeps in. It starts eating away at the metal, causing oxidation. We call this “high-temperature aging,” but in plain English, it just means the insulation gets brittle and starts flaking off like old paint. Doing it the right way
We decided to stop playing that game. Instead of just slapping some glue on there, we use a high-temp silicone potting compound and a mechanical crimp. It’s basically a hermetic seal. The silicone acts like a cushion, absorbing the stress when the glass and copper expand at different rates. You really need this kind of build quality because these heaters are usually crammed into tight spots behind a mirror. There’s no breeze, no airflow—just trapped heat. If the seals aren’t built for that kind of stagnant heat, the wires will just fry themselves within a couple of seasons.
One little catch
There is a trade-off, though. Because this seal is so solid, the wires are a bit stiffer. You can’t just bend them into a sharp angle like you can with the cheap, unsealed stuff. If you force a tight 90-degree bend, you might actually crack the seal you worked so hard to build. Just give the wires a gentle curve when you’re installing them. A little bit of breathing room goes a long way in making sure your heater actually lasts.
