
Making Bathroom Heaters That Actually Feel Good
Heating a bathroom is a weird balancing act. You want that instant, cozy warmth—especially when you’re stepping out of a shower into a cold room—but you don’t want to feel like you’re staring into a landing strip light. The real trick is getting the heat high enough to kill the chill without blinding everyone in the room. This is especially important for babies, whose eyes are way more sensitive than ours.
Getting the light right
Most standard IR lamps give off this harsh, blinding white light. It’s exhausting to look at. To fix that, we tweak the spectrum. By adding specific dopants to the quartz glass or using special coatings, we can filter out those aggressive peaks of visible light. The result? A soft, gentle glow instead of a glare. We push the energy into the medium-to-long wave bands. These are the “sweet spot” wavelengths. They soak into your skin to make you feel warm, but they don’t hurt your eyes.
Fighting the steam
Water and electricity? Not a great mix. That’s why we use high-purity quartz tubes. They can handle the constant swing from freezing cold to steaming hot without cracking. But the tubes are only half the battle. The seals at the ends have to be airtight. If even a tiny bit of vapor sneaks in and hits the tungsten filament, the lamp is toast. One thing to keep in mind: your fixture needs to be just as tough as the lamp. If the housing leaks, the best glass in the world won’t stop the insides from corroding.
The trade-off
Here’s the thing: when you filter out the blinding light, you lose a bit of that raw “brilliance.” You get less light, but the heat is more focused. For those of us designing these, it means we might need to bump up the wattage a tiny bit or tighten the angle of the reflector to keep that cozy feeling. It’s a small price to pay. We’d much rather lose a little brightness than have a light that’s too harsh for a relaxing bathroom.
